ACLU Town Meeting: Presidential Authority & NSA Surveillance

In case you missed it, the ACLU sponsored a Town Meeting on Presidential Authority & NSA Surveillance. It was aired on C-SPAN and, as soon as C-SPAN fixes its link to the video archive of this footage, will be available on the C-SPAN web site.

This Town Meeting was an excellent presentation of the issues by an impressive panel, including the following scholars and experts:
Marvin Kalb (Moderator): Lecturer in Public Policy at the Keenedy School of Government at Harvard Univerity; Senior Fellow at the Joan Shorenstein Center on the Press, Politics and Public Policy; Faculty Chair for the Kennedy School's Washington programs; the Shorenstein Center's Founding Director and Edward R. Murrow Professor of Press and Public Policy (1987-1999; a distinguished journalist with 30 years of reporting for CBS and NBC News; and author.

Lawrence Tribe: The foremost Constitutional Law expert of our time; well-respected Professor for Harvard Law School; author of hundreds of articles and texts (including the seminal reference on Constitutional Law); a legal scholar that is respected by liberals, moderates and conservatives; and most often consulted or cited on Constitutional questions.

Jim Harper: Director of Information Policy Studies for the CATO Institute focusing on adapting law and policy to technology, national security and problems of the "Information Age"; a member of the Department of Homeland Security's Data Privacy and Integrity Advisory Committee; author and consultant for news media as well as author for several law journals and reviews; and editor of Privacilla.org, an Internet think tank on privacy issues.

Mary DeRosa: Senior Fellow in the Technology and Public Policy Program at the Center for Strategic & International Studies; experienced author and speaker intelligence reform and national security legal issues; active member of the Markle Foundation Task Force on National Security in the Information Age; previous assistant and legal advisor as a member of the National Security Council staff (1997-2001); Special Counsel the Department of Defense (1995 to 1997); law clerk to the Honorable Richard J. Cardamone on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit; and experienced lawyer.

John Dean: Former Counsel to the President of the United States (Nixon); former Chief Minority Counsel to the Judiciary Committee of the United States House of Representatives; former Associate Director of a law reform commission; former Associate Deputy Attorney General of the United States; major Republican figure involved in the Watergate scandal; and author of articles on law, government, banking and politics.

Anthony Romero: Executive Director of the ACLU; former executive at the Ford Foundation's Human Rights and International Cooperation Program; former Ford Foundation Program Officer for Civil Rights and Racial Justice; former staffer for the Rockefeller Foundation; and member of the New York Bar.

While ACLU's Romero can be described as a "liberal" and "activist," the inclusion of Dean on the panel certainly demonstrates the effort that went into providing a spectrum of political allegiances and ideologies on the panel. Additionally, both DeRosa and Harper have considerable experience working on issues involving national security and technology. Dean, Harper and DeRosa all have experience working within the government and advisory structures for the government under both Democrat and Republican administrations. Tribe's knowledge and understanding of the Constitution is without question. Kalb's depth and breadth of knowledge from his experience as a journalist, bureau chief and host of Meet The Press speaks volumes.

I have written Anthony Romero to ask that the ACLU make the transcript and, if possible, the video of this meeting available for all ACLU chapters and to every educator that seeks a copy. I have also written to the support staff at C-SPAN to alert them that the video feed for this program is not working. I hope to hear back from them soon.

PLEASE WATCH THIS PROGRAM if you get the opportunity.
