MercuryNews.com | 02/13/2006 | Yahoo statement about China short on details

"Yahoo statement about China short on detailsBy Michael BazeleyMercury NewsTwo days before it was due to face questions by Congress over its dealings in China, Yahoo released a statement Monday vowing to help ``explore policies'' that could guide how technology companies should operate in countries that limit free expression. The statement adds Yahoo to a list of companies that are trying to shape public debate ahead of hearings scheduled for Wednesday before the U.S. House International Relations subcommittee on global human rights."

I still find it ironic that we are concerned over how China is violating free expression and human rights while we are entangled in the illegal wiretapping quagmire.

But if we look at the developments with AOL, Google, Yahoo! and other companies, we are seeing a growing trend toward corporate fascism where corporations are spying on us at work, setting demands that we use only their products if we work for them (c.f. Ford and parking), setting limits on personal freedom (i.e. one company will fire anyone that smokes or uses tobacco), and dictates of all sorts. Are the corporations becoming so powerful that they are a "shadow government" that has more power to infringe upon human rights than our own government? Maybe we should read the Constitution and the underlying philosophy that our framers used to develop it. It's time we reminded big business that they are guests in our society and they have to serve the greater good, not just their own appetites for more money, power and influence. Doing so would require us to elect politicians that do not put the interests of big business over the rights and empowerment of the "people"... as in "We the people..."
