Federal, state and local officials discussed Tuesday how much federal help will be needed with evacuation plans in the upcoming hurricane season, which begins June 1.
David Paulison, acting director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and George Foresman, undersecretary for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, met with state and local officials from Louisiana’s coastal parishes.
“The plans in place were good plans, but we’ve never had a Hurricane Katrina situation before,” Foresman said.
Federal officials said that shortfalls in transportation are the biggest areas of concerns.
“Right now, we’re in a unique situation because infrastructure was damaged,” Paulison said.
Also, by June 1, more than 100,000 people in the state could be living in travel trailers, he said.
People will not be allowed to tow their trailers if they evacuate, Paulison said.
“Our concern is evacuating people,” Foresman said. “Trailers complicate evacuation.”
Both men made it that clear that federal involvement is not a slight to state and local officials, who normally control evacuation.
