Couric Mania: The Media Reports On Itself... Who The Hell Cares!
Will Couric as Anchor Revive News at Night?
For almost five days every news channel, newspaper, magazine or other media outlet in America has been reporting on the fact that Katie Couric will be taking over the anchor seat that is currently being held down by Bob Shieffer at CBS. There is a lot of hubbub about her salary, the switch from NBC to CBS, the fact that Katie is a woman, and what impact a woman will have as an anchor.
A. So what! Enough already! Who cares!
Katie is cute... bubbly... an experienced television personality... an established reporter and morning entertainer... but she is not all that! With all that is going on in the world, one would think that the US media would have something more important to spend their time and resources investigating and reporting.
B. It's an anchor seat with executive editorial duties.
Whooppee! Katie is either capable of doing the job and CBS is getting value for their dollar or they have made a major mistake. I do not care! This is a matter for CBS and Couric to work out. If she blows it, she blows it. If she makes it, let's all send her an e-mail congratulating her. But it is not national news.
C. Couric switched from NBC to CBS.
So what! If NBC had wanted to keep her they would have made a better deal with her. They certainly did so with Matt, her co-personality on the morning show, in her absence. Suddenly Matt is worth just as much as Katie was offered at CBS. People switch employers everyday and no one seems to get the national media attention.
D. Katie is a woman.
This is not news! She is a very cute, attractive woman with a lot of charm, grace and personality. She has demonstrated some courage in dealing with her family and personal tragedies. But she is neither the first woman to earn a national anchor spot (anyone remember Delores Handy who had the weekend evening news spot for a while?) nor will she be the last. The fact that Couric managed to break the glass ceiling at CBS only shows the shameful side of CBS.
Please, stop reporting on Katie Couric and start reporting some important things that are not getting any attention... like the number of Americans that are finding the truth about the Bush administration.
