Common Cause Seeking Support Of Obama's Ethics Proposals

Washington is awash in proposals to clean up Congress in the ongoing aftermath of the Abramoff guilty plea. Ban or limit gifts and travel, cut down on trips on corporate jets, improve disclosure, limit earmarks; all are worthy goals, but most of these plans don't go to the heart of the problem - Congress won't police itself.

The only way Congress will deal effectively with ethics is with an independent commission of Americans who can provide the effective oversight that Congress has failed to do on its own.

Senator Barack Obama has introduced legislation, S. 2259, that would set up a system of independent oversight for Congress. We have endorsed this bill. We need you to email your senator and ask them to cosponsor this legislation.

It's critical to put pressure on Congress to pass Senator Obama's bill. He is standing up for integrity, but few of his colleagues are willing to join him. They want to pass some minor reforms and keep the cozy and ineffectual ethics committees as they are.

Take this action yourself and pass this alert onto your friends. Senators need to hear from thousands of Americans now.

What Senator Obama is proposing already exists in several states. Just last week, Tennessee created an independent commission because of a bribery scandal in their legislature.

We believe what Congress needs is independent oversight. This should be the focus of any reform in the wake of the Abramoff scandal. Most of what Abramoff and others did was already against the rules - the problem was that no one was enforcing them.

It's time to reform the system and bring independent oversight to Congress. Tell your Senator to cosponsor the Obama bill and tell your friends to join in this campaign.

P.S. The most effective action you can take is to pass this alert onto a friend. We need as many people as possible telling Congress that they need an independent ethics commission.
